History Lesson for the Day

In Venice it was decreed in 1807 that all burials were to take place on the island of San Cristoforo. Isola di San Michele neighbored San Cristoforo and had one of the first Renaissance churches in Venice (1469). In 1836 the canal separating the 2 islands was filled and the new, larger island became known as San Michele. Bodies were carried to this island on special funeral gondolas, including Igor Stravinsky, and Ezra Pound.
The island is still in use today, and just like the main Venetian islands has become cramped. As such every few years the bodies are exhumed and stored in another part of the cemetery.
The point of this history story is that I went to San Michele and I mentioned that in an earlier post. More importantly I took pictures, and while I had a link to some of the pictures I decided I wanted to post one or two.

I can't help but wonder what are the stories behind these pictures...

Allie, this is so cool. I thought the photo of your dinner was something from Gourmet magazine. If the whole Wall Street thing doesn't work out, you may have a career in cooking, gourmet photography or both. Barcelona sounds great. How are you getting there? Have a great time. Uncle Victor is unable to access your blog. Maybe you can send him an e-mail w/ instructions. When is the best time to call you? Give me 3 good options and Mom and I will set up a call when we know it will work for you. Love you. Keep doing what you're doing. It sounds like fun!

Hi kiddo. great site, and now I can get on.

I will e mail Jose Rios so he can give you his view of Barcelona.

I am envious that you are doing this. I chose not to when at AU in 1976 and regret it to this day.

Have a great time and seize the day...
